The Producers
Breeders of coloured are usually small farmers with small flocks who know most of their sheep by name or by sight and have an interest in quality wool, sustainability and high quality animal care. Generally they supply the handicraft industry with fibre and hand crafters are very discerning. Their flocks often have a wide range of ages living together with sheep that can be much older than in larger scale production. Often generations of sheep live together more like a family unit. Many sheep can spend all of their life on the farm and never be sold to a saleyard. Even retired from lambing ewes can continue to produce wool.
Our coloured sheep, which we breed in the Perth hills, Western Australia, are both Merino and Corriedale and we do a cross breed of the two. This line is sometimes called a Comeback Merino or what some would liken to a Cormo or Polwarth breed. This cross produces excellent wool of beautiful colour and length with strong resilient animals that do not require mulesing. They are very friendly with gentle handling and feeding especially over the summer months and happily follow us for a bucket or when called to a gate for a paddock move. We also keep a few pet sheep of other breeds, such as the Border Leicesters in the photo. Our sheep that we have bred are not mulesed but we do get sheep from larger farms from time to time that may already be done and would otherwise have been culled. Sometimes we will purchase fleece from other small growers to supplement our wool bales and generally can trace this wool and these sheep and can attest to their ethical and quality care.
The natural and unbleached white wool in our products is sourced only from quality Australian growers and the wool is traceable from the farm right through the manufacturing process.
For products other than wool we support Australian producers and creatives that are aligned with our ethos and are keen to be represented in our retail space.
